Choosing your Health Team

May 01, 20241 min read

When I was growing up, I remember being taken to the medical doctor for routine shots and I saw the nurse when I skinned my knee.

When I was having difficulty seeing, I was taken to the optometrist.

I got to learn that there were doctors for different conditions such as heart, skin, urinary/bladder, lung, gallbladder etc.

I was instructed to see my medical doctor annually for a “health checkup”. Throughout out my teens, young adult years, seeing the medic once a year, the dentist twice annually and the eye specialist were sufficient to maintain my health, as I knew it.  However I started to find that there were certain symptoms whenever they came up were not problematic enough to warrant treatment by the doctor and I was told it was not serious enough for treatment.

In 1986 when I discovered there were other providers for health other than AMA doctors, a whole new world opened up for me. I found out there were Osteopathic Doctors, Chiropractors, Naprapathic Medicine, Doctors of Acupuncture, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, oh my goodness, there were massage therapy, nutritionist, exercise physiologist, movement therapists, social workers, counselors and the list goes on and on.

From 1986 I started to put my health team together.

Medical Doctor – Annual
Dentist – Bi-annual
Optometrist Every 3-5 years
Chiropractor – Quarterly
Massage Therapist – Quarterly
Mental Health Counselor - As needed

As the years went by and I continued to take more and more ownership of my health, my frequency to certain team members changed...

Chiropractor – at least bi-monthly
Acupuncturist – at least bi-monthly
Massage – 1 to 2 weekly
Sauna – bi-monthly
Exercise physiologist – weekly

Who is on your health team?

Sharon-isms

Most of us strap on our troubles and hold onto them, versus leaving them behind.

Saying "I have a knot here” sounds so disempowering! Try using statements such as slow energy, or imbalance. You’ll feel more empowered to choose how to start your healing.

Pain is our signal that says, “Give more blood”; “I need food”; “I need oxygen”; “I need to clean out!”

Things become know when fear is triggered. Most times, fear is not meant to stop us; it is there to slow us down so we pay attention to the details, or something new surfacing.

The muscle that started the problem is in the back office snoozing while everyone else is trying to do its job.

We are organic beings. Live simply, eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water, rest and exercise.

Everything we view outside of us is a metaphor for what happens inside of us. We get so enamored by what we see that often we forget to bring it back home to our bodies.

Breathe all the way down your spine to your tailbone…now include your legs. Breathe to the soles of your feet. Feel your whole body expand like the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

Testimonials

Dear Sharon, at my voice lesson the other day, my teacher was flabbergasted at the amount of energy I had. She had never heard that before. So I just wanted to send you a note to say thank you so much, because I'm sure it is due to your unblocking the areas where my energy is blocked! I never would have imagined the extent of the benefits of a deep tissue massage! Thanks so much!

Sharon continues to grow as a therapist and has refined her work to an art. I’ve worked with dozens of massage therapists over the past 2 decades, and every time I return to Sharon, I realize that any effort or cost to see her is worth it…. And I mean every word!!!

Loved my massage. It felt as thought every fiber of my being was being tended to, lovingly. Glad we had some time for quiet reflection and messages.
